Xi'an is home to a wealth of historic sites. Having been the capital of China under many different dynasties and for more than 1000 years in total, Xi'an has sights related to many parts of the long history of China and is a gem for any history buff.

The main sight and for many the reason to go to Xi'an is the truly stunning Terracotta Army. More than 7000 sifesized clay soldiers guard the tomb of Emperor Qin, who united China in 221 B.C. The main part of the army, now Pit 1, was found in 1974, with pits two and three being discovered in 1976. The importance of the Terracotta Army is reflected in the care that is taken when excarvating it, but even though the process is slow more than 1600 figures have already been restored and lined up in their original positions.

Besides this world-famous sight Xi'an is also home to the lively Muslim Quarter. Xi'an used to be the end destination of the Silk Road, and thousands of Muslims who traveled to Xi'an to trade ended up staying here. The Muslim Quarter is a fascinating place of street vendors, alleys and the Grand Mosque. The oldest preserved Spirit Way in China is also found here, along with numerous imperial tombs dating back hundreds of years. The Han Yangling Terracotta Army is also worth some of your time. Although much smaller than the Qin army you can get very close to the figures due to the see-through floor, making it a fantastic experience to visit this place. Coupled with the Big and Small Wild Goose Pagoda and one of the best history museums in China, a well-preserved City Wall and much, much more, Xi'an is a must-go destination when visiting China.

Xi'an can be very cold in winter, and hot in summer, but nevertheless Xi'an is a good all-year destination. Stay centrally, as Xi'an's downtown area is a fascinating mix of modern streets surrounded by old city parts.
